While most self respecting Italians were spending Ferragosto (the August holiday) turning strangely leathery on a beach somewhere, I was in Abruzzo with my friend Petulia, her boyfriend Rob, and her enormous family doing something way better: bottling tomatoes for the coming year!
Petulia’s family in Abruzzo harvested 400 kilos of tomatoes this summer and with the help of 16 family members, these were peeled, squeezed and bottled with fresh basil. This will be the family’s tomato sauce supply for the coming year.
I will share with the rest of the fam and give you your share of bottles:-)
You bring back memories of my childhood in my grandmother’s kitchen. As young children we would help prepare the tomatoes and bottle them for sauce for the year while my grandmother was at the stove making a huge wheel of soap and the men were in the basement making wine. It was the best of times. Thanks for the memory
if it was legal to send stuff like that to the US id mail you a bottle!
