Canteen, Great British Food in London

Written by Katie Parla on January 29, 2010

Occasionally good, usually great, and always moderately priced, Canteen serves traditional British breakfasts, stews, and roasts in four locations throughout London. My go-to is in Spitalfields, where the eggs benedict beat out those of the other branches. Canteen’s menu is rife with local produce, free range meats, grass fed beef, and stellar cheeses (Neals Yard, of course).

There is a standard menu of breakfasts, starters, mains, and sides, as well as changing specials. Pies, stews, and roasts change daily. I have tried quite a few special items and so far, the roasted duck at the Royal Festival Hall stands out as one of the best dishes of the winter for me. Sweet, moist, and pleasantly gamey, it is a shame that it is not a fixed menu item. Fortunately, I can depend on the chocolate brownie caramel sundae for consolation.
