Taverna dei Fori Imperiali, Rome

A restaurant that is 100 feet from the Roman Forum could theoretically serve the world’s worst food and still stay in business. Fortunately, Taverna doesn’t agree with this approach and serves fabulous pasta, meat and fish.  The inventive chef blends Roman recipes and ingredients with Sicilian influences.  Its shown up in some guidebooks and in magazines of late, so booking is essential, especially to snag a spot outside in the summer. There is a full printed menu but wait to hear the specials rattled off by Aldo or Claudia, the chefs enthusiastic kids.

I got the polpettone di vitello con pistacchi (veal and pistachio meatballs) the other night. They were a special and they were fantastic!

Definitely also one of my favorite places in Rome. I love their pasta fresca with radicchio, gorgonzola and walnuts and their blending of Roman favorites with Sicilian specialties.

I loved this place when I was there in March of ’07. I am returning to Rome in Nov. and this is one of my stops without a doubt. Loved the people there too

Any need to book at table for lunch?

Not usually unless its a weekend and you want to sit outside. I show up without reservations at lunch all the time and can always find a table, inside or out. FYI Taverna is closed Tues. Enjoy!

[…] After closing its doors in September for more than three months of renovations (at a new location) Taverna dei Fori Imperiali in Rome’s Monti district has reopened. Sadly, I missed Saturday night’s the inaugural dinner, but it will be one of my first stops when I return to Rome later this month. The new and improved Taverna dei Fori Imperiali is located on Via dei Fori Imperiali 9, just a few doors down from the original spot. For more on Taverna dei Fori Imperiali’s food and service, consult this post. […]
