Visiting Rome in August used to mean eating badly or seldom, but things have changed in recent years (for a variety of economic reasons, places just can’t afford to close for a month) so gastronomic-minded visitors no longer need to compromise on meals. Some great restaurants in Rome will be open for most of the month, so whether you want incredible pasta, tasty pizza, specialty coffee, or some down-home offal, you won’t be disappointed.
Please note, these openings have been updated for 2026. They are accurate as of July 24. Still, be sure to confirm openings before turning up. And be sure to book well in advance and bear in mind that August 15 (The Feast of the Assumption aka Ferragosto) is a national holiday and most (but not all!) businesses citywide will be closed. Of course gelato shops stay open for the holiday (Otaleg, Torcè, Al Settimo Gelo, and Gracchi are my faves)!

Rome’s markets in August remain open Monday through Saturday, though many individual stalls do closer several weeks or the whole month and will re-open in September. You’ll still be able to find provisions at a handful of places in Mercato Trionfale, Mercato di Testaccio, and in the other markets throughout the city.
Meanwhile, La Tradizione, a salumi and cheese shop near the Cipro metro station, is staying open throughout the month except for August 15 and on Sundays, as their usual day of closure.
