Janta Fast Food, the Indian cafeteria and takeaway joint former known as Kabir Fast Food, is delicious. They serve curries, lentil stews, and many vegetarian/vegan dishes in an extremely basic dining room just off Piazza Vittorio. Unlike a lot of the pricey Indian places in nearby Monti, this budget-oriented spot serves food on metal trays–an upgrade from Kabir’s plastic ones–in a no frills setting. What it lacks in tablecloths and china it makes up for in flavor and friendly atmosphere and for years, this has been my go-to spot for a quick spice fix. Start with one of the fried vegetable samosas or pakoras and finish with one of the tooth-achingly sweet desserts, such as ras gulla and gulab jamun. The staff is super nice, service is quick and you’d be hard pressed to spend more the €10 for a full meal.
