My friend Kitty of La Grotta Ices served white peach ice cream with zabione whipped cream. Brilliant.
The artisanal producers at Spa Terminus in Bermondsey have come a long way. After facing difficulties with nearby Borough Market, London’s top producers founded their own marketplace at Maltby Street. Rising commercial rents forced them to move yet again, this time to Spa Terminus, a few blocks southeast, where they have found long term, relatively low-cost spaces, a necessity for keeping the marketplace thriving.
I paid a visit yesterday and found some of my favorite vendors from Maltby Street: Monmouth Coffee, The Kernel, Neal’s Yard Dairy, The Ham & Cheese Company, Fern Verrow, and La Grotta Ices. I also saw some new businesses, which are nothing short of outstanding. The Little Bread Pedlar does exquisite pastries, both savory and sweet. In their arch, Coleman Roasters, which roasts in Camberwell, was serving delicious piccolos (like caffe macchiato but with a bit more milk). The London Honey Company was well stocked with locally made honey and The Butchery had some of the most beautiful meats and organs I have ever seen.
Over at Maltby Street, you can still find a few excellent vendors, as well as 40 Maltby Street. See this website for a map.
